Be Prepared: Build Your Food Storage & Emergency Kits One Week At A Time

Before my boys came along I didn’t care much to learn about food storage or prepare myself for emergencies. I was naive to the fact that some day their might be a natural disaster or an emergency situation where I couldn’t just run down to the store and pick up things I needed. Now that I am a mother and wife I have more than just myself to worry about; I have to keep my family protected and prepared for anything and everything. I am blessed to have a super awesome mother-in-law who is on top of her game when it comes to food storage and she shared with me this list of items that are good to have for our food storage and our emergency kits. I’ve included a Printable Checklist for you too so you can check things off as you get them. Being the frugal gal I am I like to shop ads and sales so I probably won’t be getting these things in this order.

This is something I never thought about until Hurricane Sandy hit and we had NOTHING in the pantry. Thanks for this check list. I really need to go through and make sure we stock up on this stuff.

It’s crazy how we think we are prepared until something happens. My goal is to be fully stocked by the end of this year

I really need to work on my food storage in case of emergency. I have limited space in my new home and I haven’t found somewhere to store an emergency storage but I’m going to have to. We have really bad weather coming in on Thursday and I hope my emergency kit is up to date. I’ve really been slacking in these two areas so thanks for the reminder and the tips.

I hear you Terri. We just moved from a smaller townhome and it was really hard finding room for the extras. I hope you all stay warm and safe in this weather.

Definitely a helpful list for all of us to reference in the event of a pending emergency. My prayer is that we never have cause to reach for our kits.

Thank you Bianca!! I have always been the same way too, or said “Next month we’ll go to Costco” and stuck up, but next month never happens. This way is so much easier.

I love this list . I live in where it floods and have lots of Hurricanes. I was fortunate to have been living away from Home during Hurricane Katrina but all my family including my husband lived through it. So my husband always makes sure we are prepared for emergencies! Thank you for sharing!

I can’t even imagine how scary it would be to go through a hurricane. They say we’re overdue for a big earthquake here in Utah so I want to keep my shelves stocked if and when it happens. I’m glad your husband makes sure you are all taken care of 🙂

Living in the Midwest, I’ve been pretty fortunate not to have had the experience of any natural disaster or big emergency situation. But, this list is wonderful! What a great way for anyone coastal especially to have a game plan ready for the unpredictable weather that comes upon us! Thanks for sharing 🙂

These are such great ideas. Thanks for sharing and linking up with Tuesday Talk.
Last winter our entire area lost access to our water. (Over 500,000 people) Not only did we not have water to drink, we couldn’t wash our clothes, take showers, or even use it to water our plants. An unknown chemical leaked into our water supply and for six weeks we had NO water. In fact, if you did use the water, you ended up with burns and irritated skin. So, we now keep water on hand ALL OF THE TIME. I never thought about a food storage emergency kit, but this is really helpful!
    Thank you!
