Is Santa (or your SO) bringing you a Cricut for Christmas?! Check out the Best Cricut Supplies for Beginners here including tools, materials and more! Lots of stocking stuffer ideas!
This post is sponsored by Cricut. All thoughts and opinions are 100% mine alone.
I remember when I got my first Cricut (the Explore Air) I had just found out we were expecting our third baby, our first girl, and I was so excited to make all the things for my little princess. She has since upgraded to queen status and I still make her all the things! I had used a cutting machine before (if you’re debating between getting a Cricut and Silhouette, check out this post for my thoughts on the two) so I was pretty familiar with how to cut vinyl and htv but was a little nervous to switch to a new design program. Thankfully the Cricut Design Space was SO easy to use and I was making onesies, bows and headbands in no time!
If you’re anything like me, I’m sure the thought of creating all the things with your Cricut is both exciting and a little scary. Not only are the design possibilities endless but so are all the extras you can get! Today I want to share with you the best Cricut supplies for beginners and share some super easy projects to get you started too! If you haven’t ordered your Cricut yet and not sure which one is right for you, I’ll go over that briefly as well!

Best Cricut Supplies For Beginners
The Cricut machines themselves are amazing craft tools and there is not a whole lot of extras you need to get started. However there are some tools and accessories that can make crafting a little bit easier. Here are my tool recommendations for new Cricut owners:
- Tools – The Essential Tool Kit is my favorite because it comes with everything you need to help make crafting easier. I use the paper trimmer for cutting my materials (including vinyl and htv) down to size before I put it on the mat, the scissors are just sharp enough for cutting all materials too. The scraper is perfect for getting extra paper off your cutting mats. The spatula is perfect for getting your materials off the mat without curling. And the weeding tool and tweezers make weeding you projects SO much easier.
- Cutting Mats – Whatever Cricut machine you get will come with at least one cutting mat. But you may need more mats depending on the types of materials you plan on cutting. If you’re not sure what mats you would use the most, this variety pack is a great bundle. Here is a breakdown of what you use each mat for: LightGrip – paper, cardstock and thinner materials. StandardGrip – vinyl, iron-on (htv), thicker cardstocks StrongGrip – chipboard, kraft board, wood, thick materials.
- EasyPress – If you know that you’ll be doing a lot of iron-on projects, the EasyPress is a must for your collection! There are a variety of sizes available ranging from the Mini (which is perfect for small projects like onesies, keychains earrings and more) up to the 12″x10″ which makes adding iron-on to pillows and large shirts a breeze. Learn more about the features of the EasyPress machines here and check out all the available options here.
- Cutting Ruler – these are really nice for both measuring and cutting materials before or after they have been cut with the Cricut. I really like the edge that protects my fingers from getting cut!
- Maker Tools – If you’re getting a Cricut Maker there is a whole suite of tools you can use when crafting. You can check out all the available tools here. Want to learn more about what each of them do? Check out this post!
Best Cricut Materials For Beginners
There are a whole lot of tools available to use with your Cricut machine, but even MORE material options! With so many choices it can be a bit overwhelming to know what you need and what you’ll actually use.
If you’re not sure what type of crafts you want to make, a bundle might be a good option to start with. This Mixed Materials Bundle has a good variety of vinyl and iron-on materials as well as transfer tape and a replacement fine tip blade.
If you’re a paper crafter, this Paper Bundle gives you a variety of different sizes and types of paper too!
Getting a Maker and want to get an idea of all the materials you can use with it?! Check out the full list here.
Already know you want to cut mostly vinyl, or mostly HTV (iron-on)?! There are a ton of variety packs available that offer you different colors that coordinate really well together. Check out the vinyl variety packs here. And these are the iron-on variety packs.

What Cricut Machine Is Right For Me?!
Feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the options? Still not sure what Cricut machine would be best for you? Really you can’t go wrong with any Cricut machine. While a lot of the benefits of the Cricut machines are the same, there are a few unique benefits that set them all apart.
Cricut Joy
The Joy is the newest of the Cricut machines and is perfect for on-the-go crafters, teachers, or anyone who is limited on space. It is also the only Cricut machine that allows you to cut without a mat. If you are big into making cards, large designs or just someone who doesn’t know if they craft enough to make the investment worth it, the Cricut Joy is for you! You can read more about the Joy and all it does here. Want to check out the bundles that are available and order?? Check out this page.
Cricut Explore Air 2
This was the second Cricut machine I got and I still use it ALL the time. The Air 2 has the option to cut at 2x speed and is able to both cut and score materials (scoring is great when making cards or gift boxes). You can also use the new Foil Transfer Kit with the Air 2. If the Maker is out of the budget for you, the Air 2 is a great option and is able to cut dozens of materials! Check out all the Explore Air 2 machine colors and bundles here.
Cricut Maker
The Cricut Maker by far gives you the most design/project possibilities. With 6 Maker specific tools available you can cut, emboss, engrave or draw on hundreds of materials. You can also use the Foil Transfer Kit with the Maker too! Want to learn about EVERYTHING the Maker does?! Check out this post. See all the available Maker machines and bundles available here.
Want to take a more in-depth side-by-side look at all three machines. Check out this post.
