How To Have Fun and Teach Units of Measurements

Have fun learning units of measurement with Scotch® Magic™ Tape.

If you follow me over on Facebook you’ve probably seen the fun kid crafts and home school posts from other bloggers that I share. Both of my boys have a desire to learn no matter what they are doing…or what I’m doing. If it’s cooking, crafting or just playing outside they are always amazing me with how much they know and how much they want to know.

Anytime my husband or I bring out the tape measure their eyes light up and they are mesmerized by the numbers and the tape being pulled out. They were particularly interested when I was making our Olaf and Mike Wazowski Pinata with the tape measure and the tape. Now that we are getting back in to our tot school routine, and both my boys are getting older, I thought it was time I started sharing with you some of the ways we learn as we play. This week I wanted to teach them what all those numbers on the tape measure meant. Because they loved playing with tape so much I figured that would be the best (and most fun) way to learn. So when I was at Walmart picking up some back to school supplies I decided to pick up some Scotch® Tape too. Thanks to back to school time I found what I needed not only in the stationary section but also right up front in the back to school section.

We took some time at first counting the inches on the rulers and then measuring different things around the house, the table, DVDs, toys, how tall they are. Then once I felt they had a good grasp of inches vs. feet. I decided to bring the two together and teach them how inches added together equal feet. All you need is:

Paper (I used bright colored paper because who doesn’t love bright colors)
Scotch® Magic™ Tape .75×500″ or Scotch® Transparent Tape Transparent ¾ in x 250in
Post-it® Page Markers
Ruler
Pen

Start by measuring out 6 pieces of 2″, 3″ and 4″ pieces of Scotch® Tape.

Using three Post-it® Page Markers write 2″, 3″ and 4″ and line them up above the correlating pieces of Scotch® Tape.

Line the ruler up on the paper, it’s going to hang off a bit and that’s OK, and have each kid line up the first piece of tape starting at the top of the ruler.

Using the Post-it® Page Markers mark each section.

Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you have one foot of tape.

Count how many Post-it® Page Markers there are how long each piece of tape is (6 two inch pieces of tape equals one foot).

Let the kids experiment with the tape and ruler on their own and see if they can tell you how long each piece of tape is.

My boys had so much fun playing with this that they each went through almost an entire roll of tape! But they picked the measurement thing up quickly and now everywhere we go they ask “How many inches do you think that is?”, or they tell people “There are 12 inches in one foot”.
