Being pregnant during the summer can be tough. Have these essentials with you to make life a little easier.
I’m happy to say I’ve made it to the third trimester! This pregnancy has been a whirlwind of emotions but I’m so excited to welcome our baby girl into this world and even more excited that that time is almost here. Both of my boys were late spring babies so I was pregnant for only a short time during the hot summer months. This time around has definitely been different. Today I want to share with all the other mamas out there who are having a hard time in this heat what I have with me when we go to the park or the pool (or really anywhere where air conditioning isn’t available) that helps make things a little more comfortable.
Water- This should be an obvious one but sometimes it’s the one thing I have to run back into the house and get. Staying hydrated when you’re outside is so important; even more so now that we have another human being we’re growing inside our bellies. There’s nothing worse than being sick when you’re pregnant and keeping yourself hydrated is one of the easiest ways you can stay healthy. Cold water isn’t always necessary but it sure does taste better when it’s 90° outside. That’s why I love having CVS just down the street. When we were headed to the pool last week I stopped in and saw that they are joining forces with The Coca-Cola Company in the new “Life Quenching” Movement; a way to encourage people to stay hydrated and easy ways to do that available at CVS. CVS is also offering an added bonus to keep yourself hydrated; when you spend $5, you get $2 in ExtraBucks rewards in-store with your CVS ExtraCare Rewards Card. You know I love savings so I picked up a few bottles of smartwater and Powerade.
Electorlytes- This may sound like a tough one but it’s actually really easy too. While you’re at CVS picking up water get a bottle or two of Powerade. Sometimes you need something more than water to stay hydrated (and that has more flavor) and Powerade is my favorite choice. The electrolytes in Powerade help keep the body hydrated and they taste good too!
Snacks- As I’m sure you already know being pregnant makes you hungry all the time. It’s good to have some snacks with you wherever you go to keep you a happy mom and not the dreaded “I’m hungry don’t talk to me” mom. I like having snacks that are easy to eat, easy to clean up and high in fiber. This may be a little TMI but you will want to make sure you are regular before you give birth and have lots of fiber in your system. After having your baby it is very easy to get backed up and can be super painful too. My go to snack is trail mix with raisins and dried fruit.
Sunscreen- I always apply sunscreen before we leave the house but also take some with me just in case we are out longer than planned. When I was pregnant with Rohrl, my first, I got a really bad sunburn on my back while we were at the beach and I was miserable for a week. All I wanted to do was lay in bed with nothing touching my back. That isn’t an option now that I have two kids running around so keeping myself protected from sunburn is key.
Hat- Whether it’s a baseball cap, bucket hat or big floppy hat, having a hat to protect your hair and face from the sun is important too. Have you ever gotten a sunburn on your scalp? Not only does it hurt but when it peels it looks nasty too! The easiest way to keep this from happening is to wear a hat.
Water Mister- OK this is one of the coolest things ever! Maybe it’s my pregnancy hormones talking but this is one thing I can’t live without this summer. It’s a spray bottle with a little fan attached. You can spray yourself with water, turn the fan on and keep yourself cool. It’s perfect for misting your arms, legs and feet and really does help make those super hot days more enjoyable.
Magazine- I’ve already started nesting and am always looking for ways to prepare for our little miss. I love getting recipes, organization ideas and other projects from magazines. A few of my favorite are Family Circle, Better Homes and Gardens and Shape.
Being pregnant during summer doesn’t have to miserable. Just make sure to have these essentials with you when you’re out and about and you’ll make life that much easier. If you don’t have one (or any) of these things stop in to your local CVS; you can pick up everything I listed above in one spot! Are you expecting this year? When are you due?

Congratulations! You’re getting close to the finish line! I remember being pregnant with my son through the WHOLE summer and oh my gosh it was so hot! It’s unbelievably important to stay hydrated at that time. I had loads of braxton hicks any time I got even a little dehyrdated, so glad you’re focusing on it! {client}

Thanks Cristi! We’re only a few weeks into summer and all I want to do is stand in front of the freezer lol But the spray mister helps out a ton when we’re outside. I haven’t had any braxton hicks yet but I will make sure to keep the water and powerade flowing all summer long 🙂
