Learn how to make faux leather earrings with Cricut Joy in just minutes!
One of the things I love the most about my Cricut Joy is how quick and easy it makes crafting! Thanks to matless cutting and the smaller size, it makes crafting anytime and anywhere a breeze. But I get asked a lot, because it is so easy to use, can you cut more complex materials, like faux leather.
Can Cricut Joy Cut Faux Leather?
One of the most commonly asked questions we have in our Cricut Joy Help Group is can I make faux leather earrings with the Joy. I’m here today to tell you yes you can! And it’s SUPER easy too!
Today we are going to make these fun teardrop faux leather earrings with Glow-in-the-Dark HTV on top. You can definitely make teardrop (or any shape really) earrings with just faux leather, but I just love the extra pop this HTV gives to the design.
However not ALL faux leathers are capable of being cut on the Joy. As you’ll see in the video tutorial below, faux leathers that have a softer, fabric-like backing are not able to be cut with the Joy. I’ve tried a dozen different types of faux leather and the Joy just can’t cut through those faux leathers with the softer backs.
Where Can I Get Designs For Earrings?
Cricut Design Space has an image set with over 60 different earring designs that you can use with all three Cricut machines. To see all the designs search LEATHER EARRINGS in Image Sets.
If you are looking for more variety, or seasonal designs with overlays, my favorite place to get design files is Design Bundles. They offer really great designs in bundles where you can get hundreds of designs for just a few dollars. I got the designs I’m using today in the Fall Craft Bundle.
What Else Do I Need To Make Faux Leather Earrings?
When you’re cutting faux leather with the Joy, you’ll need to use the StandardGrip Mat. Once your earring designs are cut you’ll need earring hardware and some pliers to put them together. I really love these pliers from 143Vinyl. To make these Spiderweb Earrings check out the full supply list below:

DIRECTIONS:
Upload your earrings design SVGs (or add them from the Leather Earrings image set in Design Space) and add them to a blank canvas.
Resize design to 2.5″ tall. If you’re using multiple layers, like we are here, resize both designs and align center to make sure they are the same size.
Duplicate design so you have two earrings. Click MAKE IT.
Select ON MAT from the pop up window on the preview screen.
If you are using HTV, be sure to mirror your image on the preview screen.
On the make it screen select Everyday Iron-On from the drop down menu of materials for the spiderwebs.
Load your HTV on your StandardGrip mat shiny side down and load your mat into your Joy when the light on top is flashing. Click GO in Design Space to cut your design.
Click UNLOAD in Design Space when design is finished cutting. Remove mat from Joy and remove HTV from mat and weed excess vinyl.
Select FAUX LEATHER from the drop down menu for materials. Change pressure from default to MORE.
Put faux leather on StandardGrip mat pebbled side up. Load mat into Joy when prompted to in Design Space. Click GO in Design Space to cut design.
Click UNLOAD in Design Space when design is finished cutting.
Preheat your EasyPress 2 to 280F and 30 seconds. Preheat faux leather for 5 seconds. Preheating your faux leather helps the HTV stick better.
Place your HTV design over the faux leather and tape down to EasyPress mat with heat resistant tape.
Press for 30 seconds with medium pressure. Let HTV fully cool before removing plastic backing.
Use jewelry pliers to attach jump rings and earring hardware to faux leather.
This is a quick and easy project perfect for both beginner and advanced crafters! Faux Leather earrings are also great items to sell if you have, or thinking about starting, a custom shop. To learn more about how to make money with you Cricut, check out this post.
