Enjoy tasty snow cones at home with this quick and easy homemade syrup.Ā
One of my favorite memories as a kid was going to the Sno-Shack to get snow cones when we went to the grocery store. We lived about 45 minutes from the nearest store so we only went a few times a month which meant we usually got snow cones every trip during the summer. I remember being amazed at all the flavor options…and even though I always got the same flavor (blue raspberry) I still spent a good amount of time deciding which flavor I wanted.
Now that my boys are older they are enjoying the deliciousness of snow cones as well. But since our closest store is less than 5 minutes away we go more than a few times a month and their snow cone habit was getting to be expensive. So when I was planning ourĀ Frozen PartyĀ in July I knew snow cones would be a must; not only are they delicious but what says Frozen more than an icy snow cone?! When I was shopping for supplies I found snow cone syrup but it was so stinking expensive! So what’s a girl to do? Make her own of course!
I had all the ingredients on hand since we use Kool Aid to make ourĀ SlushesĀ so all I had to buy were the holders. I foundĀ theseĀ condiment bottles at Walmart for less than $1 and they worked perfect!Ā So all in all I spent $4 to make snow cones…way better than $2 each! AND there was some leftover syrup so we were able to make more the next day too.Ā

Thanks for the snowy recipe. The way you have made it, it looks quite easy for a newbie like me to try at home. Let me see if I can make good tasting snow cones too.
Missy says
I love this idea! About how many snow cones do you get out of a single recipe? I’m thinking of doing this for Vacation Bible School at our church this summer so I’m going to be making A LOT. š
Sydney says
Hey Missy! We didn’t drench our snowcones in syrup but all the ice to the bottom was covered we got 6-8 large snowcones out of each bottle. You could easily probably get 10-12 if your snowcones are smaller.
Missy says
Thank you so much! š

I made these today for my grandson’s birthday party. The kids are going to love them!
Sydney says
Awesome Terri! I hope everyone had so much fun at the party!!

Got a suggestion for reduced or no sugar version??
Sydney says
Great questions Dana! You could substitute the sugar for stevia for a healthier version or just use less sugar for a less sweet flavor. I do have a lemon berry slush that uses strawberries and lemons instead of the kool-aid. You can check out that recipe here: http://tastefullyfrugal.org/2015/05/copy-cat-sonic-lemonberry-slush.html

This sounds great. But I was wondering if you can use the presweetened mix?

I made up 4 double batches today for a snow cone party for my girls sports team. I used an empty 16oz water bottle and carefully poked a hole in the cap (used an awl) . The hole was perfect for dispensing the syrup. To avoid spillage during transport, I put a double layer of plastic wrap over the bottle opening before putting on the cap. Worked like a charm! I also took the part of the KoolAid packet with the flavor name and then some packing tape to affix the a “label” to the bottle, that way the kids could see what flavor options they had. Thanks for the recipe – it was a hit with the girls and I’m happy to find something I can make on the fly for pretty cheap.
Sydney says
That is a great idea Mandy! I love it!! I’m going to have to do this this summer when my kids’ friends come over so they can easily pore their own! Thanks for the great idea!
Olivia Powell says
How long is the syrup good for?
Sydney says
I STILL have some from last summer in the fridge. I shook it up last weekend and it worked great! Just make sure to keep it refrigerated.
Tricia says
If purchasing a canister of koolaid instead of packets (hard to find on our stores) how much would you use? Any idea?!? Thanks!
Sydney says
I would use 1-2 tsp out of the canister. Probably start with one and then taste, if you need add more. Hope this helps š
Lily says
Awesome recipe š very yummy thank you and have a great day.
Tammie says
Any suggestions for a sugar substitute?
Sydney says
You could try 1 tsp of stevia or 3/4 cup honey. The honey might change the consistency of the syrup though.
