Make reading fun this summer for kids with these activities!
My love for reading has definitely rubbed off on my 7 year old. There are nights where I go in to check on him at midnight and he’s up reading a chapter book! My 6 year old is another story. He’s just learning to read so reading isn’t quite fun yet.
To make reading fun for both of them, and to add some diversity to our DIY Summer Camp, I added reading as an activity twice a week. We read together as a family every night. But I want to make sure we’re keeping their brains fresh and ready for school. So we will be reading for 45 minutes-1 hour twice a week.
Summer Reading Activities For Kids
We did the summer reading program through our local library in Utah, but we live in the country here in Arizona and the library here leaves much to be desired. My kids liked the structure of the library program so I kept that in mind while looking for reading activities for our Summer Camp.
All of these activities are geared toward lower elementary school ages (1st-4th grade) but they can easily be tweaked for older or younger readers too. A lot of the activities work on reading comprehension. This is a great way to get kids in the habit of actually thinking about what they’re reading. Not just reading to get done with the book.
